Well known as « Drakkars » in common langage, those ships from the Viking age were named Langskip for Long Boat or Herskip for Warship in old Norse. They were used for exploration and raids.

It was a custom to stare a Dragon - or threatening - head in the front of the boat, to chase evil spirits of the sea. This same head could be pull off with a wooden peg, to make the ship more friendly when in a port or with friends.
